I have to agree with IBEC's stance on the recent UL zero hours report. Zero hours contracts have a bad rep across the UK and Ireland when Ireland actually has minimum payment terms in place for employees on zero hours contracts. This means that if you don't get hours you are still entitled to a minimum payment. This is to directly compensate for any uncertainty and to ensure there is minimum pay available. Recent CIPD research also found that employees on zero hours contracts were some of the happiest employees around. We cannot underestimate the importance of flexible working hours to our modern workforce. Along with Ibec I would also urge the government to hold off on dealing with this issue with more legislation without a further analysis of how zero hours contracts work in Ireland and whether they actually are the problem they are perceived to be
