For the last two years our trampoline has been gathering dust. Every time there was a storm (so many storms?!) I woke up expecting to see it gone through a hedge, with a lawsuit coming in the post. Suddenly the trampoline is back in fashion. I can be seen on it at 8.30 every morning. I'm 44. Yes, in avoiding the virus I'm afraid that I might be losing my mind!
What a week it's been. By Tuesday it already felt like the longest week ever. And yet here we are, two weeks through our shutdown and two weeks closer to normality returning. New Covid routines are settling down. Facebook workouts for the kids, foreign language apps, houseparty catch ups - new things we had never seen or done before. For the first time in 13 years I've had dinner with my family during the working week. Going for walks can be awkward though. Still struggling to deal with people walking out onto the road to avoid me, and the lack of eye contact. You'd swear we could contract this thing by looking at someone? Dr Tony? Or maybe it's just me...
Team coffee at 10 gets the day properly into gear. Conference call after conference call all day. It's exhausting. Very little room for idle banter - or a laugh. We have turned from lawyers into counsellors. That is surely what we are here to do. We need to help our clients and our colleagues. A sensible sounding board. Not a time for point scoring or finger wagging. Nobody has seen this before. Everybody is under stress. Help and be practical. How we step up and carry ourselves now will be remembered. This week i'm going to call 2 people each day for a chat. Nothing more. No agenda. Just a check in to see how they are managing. Can I (or we) help at all? Take time to thank and encourage your great colleagues at their kitchen tables, in their attics, doing their bit for your business and one another. Our political leaders are standing tall. As business leaders we need to do the same. Be compassionate, talk straight and lead by example. We are already showing a depth of resilience and spirit none of us imagined we had. Let's keep it up. Looking forward to our office happy hour (40 mins) on Zoom this evening. It's the new normal. Embrace it, find the humour where you can and take care of one another. The next few weeks will be tougher and we need to help each other through.
